About Montie House

History

Montie House is a cooperative house located at 548 M.A.C. in East Lansing, Michigan. Built in 1939 as a sorority house, Montie House was founded by Howland House in 1966 as a student-only men's co-op. It was named after Melvin Montie, a charter member of Howland House, who was killed in action during the Korean War. The house is now owned by an independent corporation, comprised of the co-ed group who lives there.

Who can live at Montie?

Although it began as a student-only house, today Montie is about a 50/50 split of students and working young adults.

How do we function?

Montie house is self governed by the members that live there. We have a constitution we abide by, that describes how we run the house. There is an executive board which consists of 10 members:
  • President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer + assistant
  • Kitchen steward + assistant
  • House manager + assistant
  • Membership officer
  • Social chair
Each month there is a house meeting, where all of the members get together to discuss house issues and vote on new members. The e-board positions are voted on at the beginning of each semester; room picks are also each semester and those go by seniority.

Are pets allowed?

Yes! We currently have 3 cats at the house. In order to bring your pet, they must be voted on by the current housemates, then you must pay a $100 pet deposit.
